The Fire, It Cracks

My last blog here was pretty short and pretty bleak.

Maybe it was a bad day or a series of bad days, I’m not sure, but it did help to put down the mess of thoughts in my head into words and try to make sense of it. I’m trying to do that now too, but it just seems a bit more messy and trying to order them into a series of coherent sentences is a lot harder. So I’m just going to describe things around me for now, and hope it helps iron out the wrinkles on my brain.

I’m sitting at a coffee shop in Jubilee Hills. It has these cool little nooks on its balcony with shelf-like tables that overlook a pretty noisy, traffic-filled road below but still has a nice vibe if you focus on the little things — the view of a lake in the distance and the high-rises behind it beginning to light up as the sun sets further beyond; the soft, acoustic covers playing over the speakers that’s loud enough to enjoy but soft enough to overhear tables nearby talking about their plans for the weekend; the comforting smell of someone wearing oud a few tables away.

There's one thing I just spotted that’s bothering me, though. A building that’s under construction on the other side of the road. It looks like it’s a few weeks away from being done: windows and doors are done as is its first coat of primer. It looks like another villa-turned-coffee shop, and perched on its terrace sit out area are two flags: the Indian national flag and another one that’s saffron in colour; a double pennon flag with an image on it.

I’ve seen the latter quite a lot in the past few weeks, as has the rest of the country, with their numbers increasing in the days leading up to January 22, 2024. On top of buildings, rows of them over temples and across streets; giant ones on autos, cars and motorbikes.

What’s bothering me, though, is the fact that the saffron one on the building across is perched ever so slightly higher — just high enough for it to be “an accident”, but visibly higher, nonetheless — than the Indian flag.

Blogstreet's Blog, Blogright!

I’ve tried writing something here at least a dozen times, but there’s never really been anything to write about. My plans of reinventing this blog as a peek into the exciting life and times of Chris Isaac is turning out to be as unexciting as my life itself.

I guess that’s not all true. It’s not like nothing has happened in the year or so since I’ve last blogged. I switched jobs (again) and moved cities (again). I sold my car (again) and bought a new one (again). I moved out of my amazing Cooke Town house and into a newer, more expensive one that’s not as nice (thanks, Inflated Hyderabad Real Estate Market๐Ÿ–•).

It’s not a boring life at all.

So why does it still feel empty?

It’s like a recurring dream I used to have — I’ve revved up a motorcycle and launched off a ramp with a clearly defined destination in sight. But instead of touching down on the intended target, I’m still up in the air, trying to propel myself forward by frantically paddling my legs like a dumbass, even though I know it’s not helping.

It’s like I’m still trying to find myself, at the age of 34. Maybe it’s not that old in the grand scheme of things, but I’m worried I might just run out of space on the landing strip by the time I do.

Oh well, might as well enjoy the view while I’m up here. Could someone throw me a few air sickness pills, though?

New car. Still haven't named her. Coming soon.

Bloghole Sun

Why do I even bother?

This was supposed to be a weekly exercise, which turned into a monthly exercise, which turned into a bimonthly exercise, which turned into a seasonal thing, and now it’s pretty much half-yearly.

About once a month, I order in sushi and wash it down with a few glasses of white wine. That, and Community -- *chef's kiss*

One could reason I’ve been a bit caught up with different things. Since my last post, I’ve been on a trip to Mumbai, quit my job, went on a holiday to the Nilgiris, started work at a new job, visited Hyderabad for my best friend’s wedding, traveled to Jaipur for work, and then just been on a crescendo of campaigns at work that peaked last week with my company’s annual startup+tech summit.

One could, but one won’t.

Pretty sure I could’ve squeezed in a post or two at the very least, even if it was about most mundane things let alone the bigger events I just mentioned (I still haven’t bought my friend a wedding gift yet — sorry Priyanka, it’s going to be a wedding+housewarming+birthday+Christmas gift in December now).

But since I’m finally writing about something, I’d like it to be about things I’m grateful for — something I was surprised to find I've actually started to enjoy doing: my work. It’s been a big leap from journalism to marketing campaigns and events, social media, video scripts, social media, and so much more. Took me a while to get the hang of it, but I think I’m getting pretty good at it.

I’m also grateful to have a bunch of colleagues I have grown to respect, have fun with, and be proud to work alongside. Of course, there are a few I want to strangle at times, but doesn’t that happen at every job anyway? Also, “grown to respect and have fun with” is pretty accurate considering it took me three months to really start talking to them and four months to actually start hanging out with. Then again, when have I ever made small talk or started conversations with anyone?

To the six people who read my blog — I can’t promise you it won’t be another six months before my next post, and I can’t promise you it will be good because clearly this one just plain sucks, and I definitely can’t promise you it will even happen. But what I can promise you is: I’m trying.

Easter Feaster

It’s that time of the year, peeps. Again.

Nostalgia for home and how things were growing up always comes around twice a year in the Isaac household (being extremely generous with the term ‘household’ when it’s just me) — Christmas and Easter.

Easter purchase of the year

I usually make it home in time for Christmas every year but I haven’t been able to do that with the Easter season. Maybe it’s because it comes around too close to Christmas, or I’m just too lazy to plan another trip home but I’ve spent the last three Easters away from family. The first year I didn’t really have a choice (thanks COVID). The second year, was a bit of a choice — it was just before the second wave when things were just about to go to shit and I decided to cancel my trip home just to be on the safe side (thanks again, COVID).

This year, however, it was completely my choice to stay in Bangalore. I could’ve gone to Mumbai to be with the sister and her family just before my nephew’s First Holy Communion (I’m literally flying there THE DAY AFTER EASTER). Or I could’ve gone to Hyderabad to spend Easter with my parents and then flown out to Mumbai with them.

But nooo, Independent Christopher had to go and make an adult choice to spend Easter NOT surrounded by a loving family that only wants the best for him. ๐Ÿ™ƒ

But anyway, what’s done is done and here we are — it’s Easter and all I can do is behave like an adult and do the adult thing and host a party for a small group of close friends right? RIGHT?

Haha, just kidding — I’mma spend the day eating beef burgers and chugging beer like it’s… Easter. AFTER I’ve attended mass where I’m singing in the choir of course, like the good boy I am.

I’ll end this blog here, mainly because there’s nothing much else to report for now but hopefully there’ll be more to write about in a month (fingers crossed). And yeah, I know I haven’t been writing as much as I said I would but hey, it’s my blog and I’ll do what I want with it.

Happy Easter, y’all. ๐Ÿป

Blogsta's Paradise

What it do homiessss.

I’ve been rewatching The Wire again and yeah it still is the greatest television series period ever period full-stop period actual period. You can tell when I’ve been watching The Wire because for a few hours after I usually talk in “gangsta”. My building cat Meow (I know) can testify to this because when you’re working the graveyard shift and you only step out of the house to throw the garbage in the middle of the night, the building cat is the only other living being you meet in person.

I also downloaded Bumble and Hinge in January and I’m proud to report I’ve gone on a grand total of 0 (zero) dates in person so far. Yep, that’s right — I’m just as useless at socialising online as I am in person.

But I think part of that problem is that I just don’t seem to have the patience to go through the whole process of getting to know the other and meet on dates and talk and blah blah blah. I just want to sit at home with someone and binge watch Euphoria and order in and cuddle and maybe go grocery shopping or make unnecessary decor purchases for our house and maybe get a dog together and also just walk around the neighbourhood and make travel plans that actually pan out (yeah, of course I wasted that week-long holiday last month lol, what did you expect from this lazy fuck?) and also have someone to talk to other than the building cat — I love Meow, but I need someone to also tell me to stfu in English sometimes.

Speaking of sad, pathetic things — it’s also nearly the third anniversary of my forced exit from the only place I’ve ever felt at home. I can never fully explain how terrifying it felt to have to give up everything and move out of a country, or about the night terrors I had for months after. There are some hardships you can look back on and think you learned something from it and almost be glad it happened — this was not one of those times. If there was ANYTHING I could do to go back and find some way to stay back, or find a different way out, I would do it in a heartbeat. And that’s all I have to say about that.

Bee tee dubs, I went to the Lulu store in Bangalore and nearly cried when I saw the KHUBZ AND CROISSANTS AND CAKES AND AND BARBICAN AND THE GIGANTIC BUTCHERY THAT I NEVER BUY MEAT FROM BUT IT JUST LOOKED SO NICE AND THE READY-TO-EAT HOT FOODS PLACE WITH MALABAR FOOD AND THE SALES DUDES IN WHITE SHIRTS AND NAVY BLUE PANTS AND THE LULU TIES. Okay, who am I kidding — of course I actually cried.

Also, I know I was supposed to be doing these blogs like once a week but… I guess once a month is better than nothing, right?

Blogaluru

How is that even though I’m back home in Bangalore and have so much more free time, I still can’t manage to find the time to sit down and string together a few hundred words together for the blog?

Oh well. At least I’m finally doing it now.

Halfway into the first month of 2022 and we’re already in a (near) lockdown. As long as things don’t get too bad, I guess we should be grateful that we’re getting this done with at the start of the year this time around. I can finally make a definite plan for that solo road trip I’ve been wanting to do ever since I bought my car. Where should I go? Pondicherry? Waynad? Coorg? HYDERABAD AGAIN?!?!?!!!

I’ve also finally started working on filling my house here with actual furniture and making it feel like a home, instead of just waiting for things to “get back to normal” before feeling like I need to settle in here. I bought a couch! And my sister bought me a nice TV table that fits perfectly in the corner of my living room. I can finally entertain more than three people at a time. Next up — buying my own bed instead of renting one.

Gotta tell ya, I’ve got a good feeling about this year. Mainly because I have no resolutions and no expectations and no plans. I’m going to just relax, and take my time and do whatever I need to, to make myself live the best possible life I’ve wanted to and OMG I’M TURNING 33 IN SIX MONTHS???@!@$#@Q#$!~)(!

*deep breath in*
*deep breath out*

!#$@#*R$#()*$#!($#!(@*#)!($!

Okay but seriously. 2022’s the year of not trying to worry about the end of the world. It’s hard to do that when your job literally requires you to read about everything that’s wrong with the world. But it’s important to have downtime that doesn’t involve trying to drown your worries in alcohol on the first day of your weekend and then waste the whole of the second day recovering from the hangover of said alcohol drowning.

First on the agenda this year is figuring out how to spend an unexpected free stretch of about nine days at the end of January because I was supposed to travel to Mumbai for a few days but since that’s not happening I need to do something to keep my occupied or I’m going to lose it sitting at home and watching TV and not have anything to do except alternate between the whole drinking and recovering thing I do on weekends except this time it’ll be like a weekend every day non-stop for nine days at a stretch and that’s definitely not a healthy thing to do right yeah I think so too.

I also realise I should probably start working on structuring these blogs a bit better. I never know what I’m going to write until I sit down in front of the laptop and just vomit words onto a document. Maybe working on a 150 words at a time and then putting it all together when I cross 1,000? Thoughts? Hit me up. No really, hit me up. It's getting a bit lonely up in here.

Also, thanks to my colleague for gifting me this extremely interesting read that I’m yet to read. I promise I won’t procrastinate and fini — OH YAY THE NEW BOBA FETT EPISODE’S OUT!

Song recommendation of the month I guess because god knows when I'll be blogging again:

Bloggitty blog

OH YEAH IT’S BLOG TIME!!!!

I know it’s been a while, but honestly nothing much has been happening in my life for me to actually blog about in the past couple of weeks, at least.

So instead of writing about what I’ve been doing, I’m going to write about what I’ve been feeling and thinking about of late. It’s going to sound like the incoherent ramblings of an old fool… and that’s exactly what it is.

I work as a journalist, and even though I’m extremely blessed to be working for one of largest news organisations in the world and have some down time whenever I need it, I still feel the same amount of stress I did when I’d work 6 days a week for a daily tabloid. Is it the people? Is it the work? Is it because I give way more attention to my professional life than my (joke of a) personal life? It’s a little bit of each, I’m sure.

I’ve already told a couple of people that I’m going to try to focus on my writing and music this coming year. I wouldn’t really call it a New Year’s Resolution seeing as I’ve begun working on one of those things already. I really hope I can stick to it, though — and putting this out online will give me some accountability at least.

I’ve been trying to listen to newer music too, but I just don’t seem to have the patience to listen to anything new for more than 5 or 6 seconds. So obviously I’ve been on a nostalgia trip for a bit. Chris Cornell’s cover of Patience is brilliant. I know you’ll like it too. It’s cool if you don’t too. I can’t force you to like the stuff I do. Just know I’ll think less of you if you don’t — I won’t say it to your face, or make you feel like it in person, but I will think less of you.

Okay fine, that was mean. Everyone has their own taste in music and that’s totally alright. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Absolutely. Nothing at all. You’re all my jalebi babies… just don’t play that shit in my house.

All of that also hampers my attempts to make new friends — something I know I desperately need to do, especially considering how I dealt with the lockdown this year (yes, I’m aware of the privilege and entitlement that comes with saying that, considering the shitstorm that was the second wave of COVID in India). Anyone else drive to the airport to pick up a box of donuts and coffee once a week because they had no one to hangout with?

I guess the point I’m trying to make is this: I want you to buy me a beer and then stay the hell away from me.

But also, mainly

It’s Sunday! Blog day! The first of many to come! Or is it the second? Because technically that one last week was the first one, no? No? Okay, no let’s count this one as the first real blog. So, here goes — BLOG 1: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RINGING IN THE EARS

It’s been kind of a tiring week even though I barely did anything. I did get back to work after a two week break (during which my cousin got married [CONGRATULATIONS KEVIN AND ROSHNI!!!] and I went for a proper karaoke night for the first time in nearly two years) and had a pretty long and tiring, but fun Friday night that ended at 6 a.m. on Saturday.

I’m currently in Hyderabad, making use of a remote working option that expires this year. Yup, COVID’s officially not the top priority anymore peeps! But I’ll be honest, I’m kind of looking forward to going back to the office mainly because even though I feel I’m kind of a loner, I do enjoy company and having people around in the background like white noise while I work. Plus, I’d finally get to drive to work (yup, I enjoy driving in not-so-busy city traffic) and also not have to wake up early every day and direct cab drivers and then commute an hour before I actually need to.

I’d also get to make use of clothes other than my now extremely worn out house tees and shorts that have literally been worn to death. Any more wear and they’d have more holes than the mesh nets on my windows. Time to dust off those formals shirts and pants and shoes! Shirts are tucked inside the pants, right? Do we need to wear chaddis inside pants? Say that again — “socks”? What in the world are those?

But also, mainly, I’d get away from the deafening silence of working at home alone through the night with no one to take a break and walk around with to get some air or a coffee or bitch about the idiots at work. Silence that’s made my tinnitus — that I’ve been conveniently ignoring and not seeing a doctor about for more than a year now — grow louder with each passing month. Yeah, yeah I’m going to get it checked out soon. In the coming days, maybe. Weeks, probably. Months, for sure. Years, definitely.

Speaking of hearing annoying things in your ears all the time, my friend Priyanka bought a new car last month! I got to drive her Jeep Compass last Sunday evening. It was okay. OKAY FINE IT WAS BRILLIANT AND MADE ME MISS EVERYTHING I LOVED ABOUT KIM CARDASHIAN. Don’t worry, I still love you, Taylor VXi Swift.

Priyanka also hosted a “dinner” at her place on Friday night. It was supposed to be drinks and poker, that turned into drinks, no poker, impromptu karaoke and dinner-at-4-a.m. But man, her cooking is brilliant.

I also got to meet a couple of colleagues I’d worked with at Deccan Chronicle — Neha Jha, Tollywood promoter extraordinaire and Latika Mehta, future master podcaster and Bollywood aficionado. Latika said I hadn’t changed a bit in six years. I’m outraged — clearly I’ve added at least 3 inches to my waistline since then. Also good luck to Neha and the team at Pushpa and Mr. Allu Arjun and family and his legion of followers who will rip me apart if I say anything other than nice things about him. Good luck, sir.

I took my mum and dad out to dinner this weekend. United Kitchens of India at Karkhana isn’t bad at all. Service is a bit spotty but that’s mainly because the place was crowded. Food’s goooooood though. Go check it out. Tell them I recommended it to you. Use my discount code THISISAFAKEDISCOUNTCODESUCKER when you ask for the bill.

And that’s all the words I can manage to string together today. I should probably start doing this over a few days instead of in one or two sittings, so I can get more done. I shall get better. I promise. Don’t go away. Please come back!

This could just be a blog

I’m just typing all this here in the hope that it will inspire me to begin writing for myself again. Personal writing, whether it’s random words, poetry (I don’t really want to do that anymore though) or even, maybe, possibly… a manifesto? I guess this is the written word’s equivalent of what artists do when they doodle. Do artists doodle? Or is that just reserved for cartoonists? Are cartoonists artists? Am I an artist? Isn’t writing an art form? Literature is considered an art form, yes. So I guess I can call myself an artist. Once, that is, I actually start writing again. Which should be soon. Hopefully.

I mean I bought a whole new laptop for it, so I’d say I owe it to myself to start writing again. It does help to let emotions and thoughts and feelings out, I’m told, instead of bottling them up. As I’ve been doing for the past… two years now? The last time I posted something on here was in January, 2019. Before the pandemic. Before things started turning to shit. Or was it after? Who even knows now. So much has happened in the last two years. But also, so little.

This could just be a blog. I have a friend who started vlogging last year, and she’s getting really good at it. I don’t think I’d ever be comfortable enough in front of the camera to do that. So maybe I should just do this — blog. Old school. Write a column. Isn’t that was people used to do a few years ago when “digital content” was all about being funny/sarcastic in a weekly online column, instead of dancing for 10 seconds? Not judging anyone at all, I’m just saying I think I’m going to stick to this for now. Maybe throw in a few photographs now and then.

Is my life really that interesting? Probably not. I live in Bangalore now. I have a job that I love. A handful of friends I enjoy hanging out with once in a while. My weekends recently have mostly involved movie marathons and drinking and eating some good food at home. I’d honestly rather go out, but getting a group of people who enjoy hanging out with each other without secretly bitching about each other can be pretty hard to put together.

Oh well, here’s to doing things better. Meeting people. Finally living my life. And yes, blogging.

(FINE I’M NOT AN ARTIST)

I wrote you a song

I'm writing you a song
to let you know I care
to let you know I'm always
going to be there

I'm singing at the top of my voice
to keep you focussed on me
to keep you distracted from
my growing insanity

I'm looking into your eyes
as they look beyond my face
as they look towards the horizon
you so badly want to chase

I'm holding your hand in mine
to stop you from letting go
to stop you pulling away and
leave me feeling low

I'm screaming at the top of my lungs
to turn your gaze on me
to turn your gaze away from the darkness
that engulfs you like the sea

I'm calling out to you but
nothing's getting through
nothing's getting through the chasm
that's been placed by you... all around you

Achhe din aane waale hain

There is no righteousness.
There is no wrong
There's just the night to fear
When the silence is long

Don't tell me I'm okay
When I'm still in pain
Don't tell me that I'm free
When I'm still in chains

No way for us to rise up
To rage against the machine
Every neck that looks up is torn down
From head to spleen

Shots of rum, shots of whiskey
Shots from guns killing me
Hands reach out to pull me up
I feel them suffocate, choking me

Defenders of the poor, the weak?
...bullshit
You think we're stupid,
So on us you're trying to pull shit?

If everything's the way
That it's meant to be,
Then why does it all reek
Of hypocrisy?

Eye of the Tiger

i can't change
and i won't
i don't need to,
to suit your immoral, foul ways
to be part of your game plan
or be anything i wasn't meant to be
or anyone i never want to be

i'm not going to bend
to you or your venom
the vile sounds coming out your mouth
that you call words
what you spit and spew ignorantly
will not weaken me
will not "make" me

i may not fight
i may not respond to your call
but i will understand
that when you lose your shit
it only makes you weaker
in the eyes of the world

so forgive me for not being able to educate myself
with the ways of the "strong"
i'm happy the way i am
and i will not yield

Carry on, my wayward son

It had been a while since David had smoked. Heck, it had been a while since he'd even hung out with someone who smoked, just to get that passive hit he so desperately longed for.

But it all came back to him naturally that evening.

As he jumped over the last few steps at the bottom of the staircase in front of his office, David's mind was on the meeting with his boss he had just walked out of, but his feet knew where to take him. It had been yet another shouting match, something he was used to by now. Years had passed since his first "disagreement" with Ram "Ball Buster" Mohan, and this one had started off just as innocuously as that one.

But this time, Ram had taken it a bit too far. It wasn't really what he had said that ticked David off, but, rather, the way he had said it — he had always thought that he shared some a very basic, understanding of respect for each other's ethics, no matter how many times they had fought over their 6 years together at the office. But all of that went out the window within a span of 30 seconds.

When he got to the small pan dabba down the road (his office was next to a school, so Ravi, the cigaratte seller, now carefully tiptoed the edge of the 200-metre buffer he was supposed to keep between him and the institution), David placed a crumpled note on the counter, took the pack Ravi had kept in its place (David used to be a regular until he "quit") and lit one up with the lighter Ravi kept hung from a piece of thread.

As David took what felt like his first drag in years (one year and 11 months, so, close enough), he thought back about the first day he had entered the office. The first thing he was told by his extremely-generous-with-advice cubicle-mate Isaac, was to never pick a fight with Ram. He hadn't really thought much of the tip, until Isaac was fired the next week for asking a question at a team meeting that Ram had led.

That hadn't really deterred him from picking fights with Ram, though. And Ram, for whatever reason, never came close to even threatening to fire David. Maybe it was because David argued with a little more reasoning and conviction than Isaac did. Or maybe it was because HR had a chat with Ram after the Isaac incident. No one knew.

By the end of his second consecutive cigarette, David had calmed down and cleared his mind, and so he began walking slowly back to the office. His anger had dissipated, but his heart was still pounding (from the smoking he supposed).

He stopped at the stairs outside his office, but instead of climbing up, he turned back and began walking back to his car. It was a crappy, ten-year-old Mazda 3 he had bought off his uncle, and David spent way too much money to keep it in running, but as long as it still got him from home to work, and back, every day, David didn’t mind.

***

Ten minutes later, David was in the elevator, going up to the tenth floor where his department was. He smiled and nodded along distractedly at Mohit, his colleague’s story about how he was saving up for a new car. David’s heart rate was still pretty high, and Mohit’s constant talking wasn’t helping. But he didn’t say anything, knowing it would only make him feel bad — Mohit was one of the nicer people at work, who thought the world of David, and they always teamed up well whenever they had to work together.

At their floor, Mohit got off and walked back to his cubicle, now satisfied with his choice of car and the great interest rate he was getting from his bank for a loan. David, on the other hand stepped out and walked towards the water cooler instead.

He sipped on a paper cup full of cold water, wondering what he needed to do next. Since his day was almost over and had no will to work on anything else for Ram at the moment, he decided he’d go to his desk, play a little Solitaire, listen to some music, and head home in half an hour.

“Hey, how’s it going?”

Asha had walked over and filled up a glass of water for herself, looking at David a little concernedly. Ram’s assistant, Asha was no stranger to the “fucks” and “sonofabitches” that flew out of Ram’s office (and his mouth) every few hours.

“I heard about the fight, are you okay?” Asha asked David, who was pleasantly surprised to see her.

He’d always had a small crush on her, but never really thought of asking Asha out because he knew just how messy office relationships could get. He also thought Asha secretly liked him back, which is why she’d always send David messages on their office chat messenger, about whenever Ram bitched about the team to her.

“The whole office probably heard the fight, Ram wasn’t being particularly subtle about it,” David replied.

Asha smiled weakly and said, “I know. There’s not much we can do about it…”

The hell we can’t, David thought to himself, but smiled back at her instead, and turned to head back to his cubicle.

The floor was now almost empty, save Asha, Ram and a few other employees lurking in the far corners.

Asha walked past him and went to her desk, looking at him from the corner of her eye, but said nothing. She knew it would be pointless trying to get David to talk to her. He rarely spoke to his own teammates, from what she heard from them.

So when he began walking towards her desk five minutes later, she was surprised.

“Do you need something, Dav-”, she began, but David had walked right past her instead. Without bothering to knock on Ram’s glass door, he strolled in and stood, staring at his boss.

Ram was seated behind his desk, fiddling with his phone. He looked up, and when he saw David he started.

“Hey David, I was just about to call you in… you really need to stop picking fights with me at meetings. It makes me look bad, you know that. And fine, I may have gone a little over board today, but you had it coming. So don’t think for one fucking second that I’m going to apologise to you. You just need to learn when to shut the fuck up, like a good little bitch.” Ram said, with a self-satisfied smile.

David, however, hadn’t heard any of that.

When Ram was finished, David took out the crowbar he had brought along from his car, which he had hidden inside his sleeve. He’d used it just earlier that week while changing a punctured tyre on his way to work. He had gotten delayed by an hour, and even though he had called in and informed Ram that he’d be late, Ram had said he’d be losing pay for that day.

He walked quickly to the desk — to where Ram was now seated, petrified, in his chair — and swung hard. Ram screamed in pain as he took the blow to his head, blood streaming down his crisp, off-white shirt.

Undeterred, David swung again. This time, the hook of the crowbar caught Ram in the cheek and tore right through it, with Ram now on the verge of passing out.

A third swing, and Ram was dead — the crowbar smashing through the top of his skull and wedging itself there, like a long-forgotten sword stuck in a rock, waiting for the chosen prince to come pull it out and rule the kingdom once again.

David’s heart rate was now back to normal. He surveyed the damage he had just inflicted, not bothered about the big splashes of blood ruining his shirt and tie, and dripping from his face.

He stood there for a minute, as Asha ran inside the room but could only stand silent, too shocked to say or do anything. David then turned around, again brushing past Asha as he headed back to his cubicle.

David sat down on his chair and looked pensive for a few seconds. He then put on his headphones, cranked up the volume and began playing a game of Solitaire, as Kansas’s Carry On Wayward Son began blaring in his ears, and he finally smiled.

Shutter down

there was no sadness,
no feelings of regret
neither the drowning of sorrows
nor the cursing of fate

the fogged up windows
mirroring their thoughts
as they held hands one last time,
done with firing their shots

their words still rung in the air
each venomous syllable
cutting through the painful silence
like anecdotes from the devil's parables

they couldn't say anything more
so the thunder spoke up instead
roaring through the glass
and shaking them out of their heads

it was the end, they knew
but neither wanted to leave first
hoping against hope, wishing in vain
that they had left behind the worst

she waited a second,
then pulled away from his grip
no words of goodbye needed
none uttered from his lip

their futures, once set in stone
now gave way to an empty abyss
they once shared their clothes, their home, their secrets, their desires
now... not even a kiss

they had been here before, many a time
but never walked through the door
and now that they did, it was strange, cold and empty
yet, freeing... suddenly, there was space for so much more

so she kept out of sight, but never too low
he hid in the shadows but kept sight of the light
both hurt, but knowing there was nothing left for them together
and that they were destined to last only until the end of the night.

3 Rounds And A Sound

it's just a temporary moment of insanity
that leap out the window you never took
the divider you never rammed into on the highway
the punch you threw at the door instead of a person

that split second
when anger, sadness, hate and helplessness
join forces to bring you to your knees
and make you want to give up

but you move on, hoping it doesn't come back
knowing that it's nothing that will last forever
but also knowing that it will be
and being aware of what scares you the most — it lasts longer each time

When the walls come down

she's walking around the room
but her eyes are on you
watching your every hesitant move
as you inch closer, she's running towards you

you realise there's nothing left
that could come in the way of this
nothing to stop this burning train
that's hurtling towards a death drop

she whispers your name
and it's everything you've wanted
you say you'll love her 'til the end
forgetting that you're only dreaming

and it's only a matter of time
before you realise that she's gone
just another wisp of smoke
that filled up your diseased lungs

never real, never yours
and the only thing that's left
that's there to keep you company
is guilt, shame and misery

Poison Rain

there's no way in hell you can't feel this
feel the way I fell for you
feel the way that you turned me into
this mess of a being with no one to
guide me through this crowded room
that's full of people just waiting to
pounce and grab on anything that moves
devour the very life that makes you, you
hoping and begging, it makes them

just as mesmerising
just as hypnotising
just as petrifying
as you make me feel
that no one else will ever be

for never will they know
just how perfectly you fit into me
into my deepest, darkest chasms
how I fill you up
with nothing but ecstasy

so take me in
let me be
the way we were meant to exist
as one

With or without you

let's just stay here
and never leave this place
where we don't have to worry
about the things we do
when we're not here
when it's not just us
when it's not just you and me

here, where the chaos of the ocean
feel more like home
than the riveted streets of filth
where we were born

here, where the lights don't exist
yet it's still brighter than the sun
and where the beautiful sound of silence
is louder than a 77,000 piece orchestra set

you and me, we've written
words of prose and words of poetry
pages filled with joy, sorrow, and everything in between
and still not enough to capture what we had, what we are
and what we could be

here, in this moment
in this place
is where we will die
and this is where we will live

When you let your imagination run wild

forget this world
forget the past
forget the pain
that will always last

it's just another day
for the world to see
how the devil's moving
inside of me

tearing, seething,
gnarling through
to break the surface
and block my view of you

the only light
that I've ever seen
that's brightened my nights
and knows where I've been

the darkeness returns
but you dispel it away
and for those few seconds
I'm myself, wanting me to stay

that's what you do
but that's what will never be
for the sun will set
and you will leave me

for who could live
with the beast that's hidden deep?
who could make me
someone you'd want to keep?

I will search
and I will find
but until then
you'll only exist within my mind
